This book is part of my 2016 reading challenge!
Meet Samantha Kingston – she has it all: three amazing best friends and schools hottest boyfriend. But Friday, February 12 is her last day on earth. Samantha dies, but gets a second chance; in fact, she gets seven chances. For seven days she relives her last day and discover the truth about her world and herself. The plot really got my attention and I was very excited to read this book, but also a bit worried it might get repetitive because this whole story is about one day. But Lauren Oliver works around it gracefully and with great storytelling she writes about the same day in seven different ways.
There are so many great characters. We have the classic mean girls, the douchebags and their victims of course. However cliché this sounds, this is still an original story.
Samantha is at first annoying and immature, but the more the story progresses the more Samantha grows into a very likable character. I like the fact that she is smart and quick to figure out things that surrounding her. At the end of this book I was kind of proud of Samantha and her destiny is heartbreaking and sad.
While reading this I couldn’t’ help thinking about Kübler-Ross model – the five stages of grief. I don’t know if Oliver thought about it while writing this book but during the seven days Samantha relives her last day she goes through all of the stages, almost each stage per day so to speak. And I thought that was genius and beautiful!
This book really got to me. The writing is great, the characters are interesting and the plot amusing.
