This book is part of my 2016 reading challenge!

This is the story of Rachel – a depressed, angry and bitter woman who takes the slow train from Asbury to Euston every day. And every day the train makes a stop and she sees “Jason and Jess” – the “perfect couple”. She makes up beautiful stories about their lives and lives in a fantasy world with them. Then one day she sees something that changes everything and Rachel is in over her head.I did not like this book at all. All the characters are horrible and the plot’s mystery falls flat because Paula Hawkins feels distracted from her own plot. Instead of filling her book with action and plot mystery, Hawkins writes about drunkenness and depressed thoughts. This book is slow and full of meaningless scenes that are frustrating to read.

Rachel is annoying and pathetic; in fact, all the women in this book are pathetic in their own way. Somewhere in the middle, I lost interest and sadly I didn’t even care what happened to any of the characters. The blackouts that Rachel haves because of her drinking feels more like a cheap trick – it’s just too convenient for her to not remember and it makes me feel like Hawkins was lazy while writing this book.

This book could have been so much better, but it’s not. A lot of people like this book so the chances are that you will too, but I really didn’t.
