This book is part of my 2016 reading challenge!
After hearing so much about this book I knew I had to read it. Not knowing much about the plot or the author I went into this book with hardly any expectations, except pure curiosity. This is the first book of four about two girls, Elena Greco and Lila Cerrullo, growing up in Naples, Italy. We follow these girls from when they are little girls until they are teenagers. We read about how their lives intertwine and how their friendship grow, but also how they are competing in everything. This was an interesting read about Naples in the 1950s.
This book is written from Elena’s point of view and I love the rawness in her way of telling her story. She doesn’t hide or tries to beautify her surroundings, which made me like this book even more.
The problem I had with this book was it was sometimes too slow. There were some parts in the book where I felt the story stood still and I was waiting for something to happen. Another thing that was a bit of a problem and that has nothing to do with the author or the writing was all of the characters. There were so many different characters in this book, they were all interesting and unique, but it was very hard for me to keep up.
The writing was great and the story was interesting and sometimes scary! As I was reading this book I could feel something dark and terrible waiting in the shadows. There was a melancholy and sad sense of the whole book and it ended in a cliffhanger!
I really did enjoy this book and will probably read all of the books in this series.
