This book is part of my 2016 reading challenge!

This is the first book in the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard. I wanted to read this book for a while and was very excited when I finally got it. But I was a bit disappointed after finishing it.This is the story of Mare who is a red in a world divided by blood – red or silver. The reds are commoners and the silvers rule the world with their godlike superpowers. But one day Mare found out that she has a deadly superpower of her own – despite her red blood. She is thrown into a world of lies and betrayal.

I find this plot to be interesting and charming. This book had so much potential, but a few chapters in I lost interest and focus. This is a really hard review to write because it’s not that I really disliked this book, but I also didn’t particularly like it either.

I had a hard time to connect and understand our main character, Mare – is she brave? Smart? Heroic? Selfish/selfless? I don’t know! She is everything and nothing at the same time in my opinion. The other problem I had with this book was that the revolution and the war between silvers and reds didn’t get enough attention. The love triangle wasn’t interesting and the big “twist” wasn’t much of a twist to me – I figured it out pretty much right away.

But it was still an okay read I guess and I didn’t feel like I wasted time reading it, but I probably won’t read the other books in this series.
