This book is part of my 2016 reading challenge!

A friend of mine recommended this book to me because I love Japan and specifically historical novels about Japan, so she thought I would like Shogun and she was right! This is the story of feudal Japan in 1600, an English adventurer, a Japanese warlord and a beautiful woman. This book has everything! An epic love story, battles, action, politics and amazing culture clashes that are hilarious to read.

James Clavell is a master of storytelling and a great writer. All of Clavell’s characters are well developed and his way of describing Japan, the teahouses, clothing, and the surroundings are very impressive. The story never stops and the characters are both interesting and unpredictable. There was so much politics involved and when I say politics, I mean plotting, planning and misleading, so you never knew what would happen in the next few pages.
The love story between Blackthorne and Mariko were very fascinating, I’ve never read a love story like this one. They had the cultural boundaries yet their love had no limits.

I don’t think there was anything that I didn’t like about this book. It was such a wonderful experience reading it! What an adventure!
