This book is part of my 2016 reading challenge!

This is a messy, funny and adventures story about a broken marriage and the need to fix it.
I was surprised how much of an adventure this book turned out to be and I found myself giggling at some parts, more than I thought I would.

This is actually a very sad story. Douglas and Connie have been married for almost three decades when one night Connie tells Douglas that she wants to leave him. This is right before their long trip to Europe. Their moody seventeen-year-old son, Albie is coming along. Douglas sees this trip as an opportunity to try to save his marriage. And things just spin out of control, this trip just gets worse by each page.

David Nicholls moves between the past and the present as Douglas relives their life together. And you can see the painful truth that their marriage was never really meant to last.

This was an entertaining book full of funny yet painful scenes, but I felt it was too long. Somewhere in the middle, I got tired of Douglas and Connie’s life and struggles and wanted to know how it all would end. Their son, Albie were a bit annoying and so was Connie. I found her to be immature and ungrateful. Douglas had his own problems, but he was a bit charming and funny so it was a bit easier to manage.

This is my second book by Nicholls and I do find him being a good writer. This book is an easy read. If you decide to read this book remind yourself not to compare it with his first book One Day because you will get disappointed.
